Visual Arts

Visual arts are a tremendous means for self-expression. Many opportunities arise in our youth program through participation in mentoring and other After-School activities on a regular basis. One of the most durable and visible expressions of our youth's creativity lies in the development of murals. Some are more short-term. For instance, many of our After-School program rooms at Casa Romero develop a new mural each year, based on the interests of the children and youth belonging to the room. Others last longer.

One example is the artwork surrounding the doors in the large conference room in our office building. Developed under the leadership of Joelle Hathaway, Juvenile Probation Art Therapist, the boys in the group first wanted to paint low-rider cars. When she responded to them that the room is used for many purposes, and maybe they needed to consider something with a broader appeal, they chose a set of faith-based themes that showed the safety they experience within these walls.

Another tremendously produced mural is located on the outside of the parish office building. Developed through a reflection process sponsored by the Illinois Department of Human Services 'Learn and Serve' the youth designed a five part mural representing significant movements in their cultural heritage.

Another new project beginning soon will target youth and young adults, ages 16 and up.  Under the direction of Claretian Brother Manuel Benavides, participantswill learn techniques in Mosaic over the course of two weeks.  Later workshops will focus on advanced skills.
