Posadas & Christmas The children put on a wonderful gospel theater play from the Gospal of Luke on Christmas Eve, December 24th. in Holy Cross Church. The pics to the right show performers at a practice the day before, the angels are well rehearsed, the shepherds look surprised at the announcement of the angels, one shepherd is pretending to play with the fire, the Kings are pointing to the star, and the drummer boy is ready to roll (an added pilgrim) ... All are ready to join the candle light procession of children for the mass!
Posadas 2009
Every evening, Dec 16th-23rd, children dress as Mary and Joseph through the streets of the Back of the Yards looking for a place of respite, a place where Christ is born! The special tradition of walking in the streets with a singing procession, of following the children dressed as shepherds, angels and Mary & Joseph, started at the parish in 1991. Ever since, beginning December 16th, the neighbors join together each evening to walk for about an hour through the streets, in song and prayer, visiting homes along the way... until finally everyone arrives at a place of welcome. A celebration follows, which included treats for the kids, food, the breaking of 2 or 3 piñatas, a raffle of gifts and special entertainment. Each evening is different, as families reflect on the meaning of Christmas, on values we share as family and how we can bring peace to our homes and our community. This is how our neighborhood prepares for Christmas!
