Begun in February, 2001, Kid’s Café provides neighborhood children and youth with a full, nutritious meal after school, and afternoons during the summer.
Through the support of a linkage with the Greater Chicago Food Depository and private donations, Kid’s Café offers meals and nutrition education to all participants. The family atmosphere offers the children and youth the opportunity to learn the social skills which are an important part of sharing a meal with others.
Donations this past year included the support of the J.S. Paluch Family Foundation, in October 2012, when the Honoree Fr. Bruce Wellems, gave to Kid’s Cafe the award to remember those children in need throughout the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Also, the recent fund raiser on March 6, 2012, raised $17,000 to support the good works of the cafe.
This school year, Kid’s Café is open Monday through Friday from 3:00-5:00 pm, under the direction of Yolanda Gonzalez. The program provides meals for 3-18 year olds involved in programming as well as those who come in from the neighborhood – ordinarily between 60 and 100 each day.
In February, 2013, Kid’s Cafe celebrated its TWELFTH BIRTHDAY with great food and fun for all!
