The Children’s Choir, now with 45 members grades 1-10, meets every Friday at 5 pm to practice in Holy Cross Church. The group sings, accompanied by the Marimba Ensemble, every Sunday at the 10:30 am mass in Holy Cross Church, at 46th and Hermitage. The Choir is led by Mr. David Panfilo, a musician in his own right as well as the father of two children in the Choir, and Jazmin Panfilo, his daughter, a student at the Merit School of Music and at Harold Washington College.
The activities of the Children’s Choir are supported in part by the children’s parents, who prepare a monthly food sale after the mass, which, besides being a fundraiser for the parish youth program, offers a strong experience of community for families in the neighborhood.
Periodically, the group is invited to perform at events outside the parish. This past year, the Children’s Choir and Marimba Ensemble played for the noontime City Hall Holiday Series as they have for many years, and the Museum of Science and Industry’s Christmas Around the World and Holiday of Lights.
