Religious Education (CCD)

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The religious education program at Holy Cross/IHM Parish is one of jewels of the parish. Its mission is to provide religious formation to children and youth in grades 1-8 and to provide the necessary sacramental preparation according to their need and at the appropriate level. Guided by over 100 catechists and aides, about 650 children and teens attend 75-90 minute sessions on Saturdays from September until the end of April.

The program, under the direction of the parish’s Director of Catechesis, benefits greatly from the wisdom, guidance, and work of a team of 12 catechists who act as both an executive and advisory board. The team meets monthly to plan, implement, and evaluate the curriculum as well as all other activities that make up the program. This group is particularly instrumental in animating the catechists and encouraging parental participation.

CLASS SIZES

Groups (class size) are generally limited to 10-15 students per catechist, so that the experience of community becomes central in the development of faith. The teaching of Church is about becoming a people of God, and so groups are formed in September so the year can be spent in an environment where children and catechists can work together as a faith group.

Children and parents are encouraged and expected to participate in Sunday mass. The parish team continues to work on developing creative ways for parent participation
