…A note from Liz…

I’m Elizabeth Sauceda but I prefer Liz. I’ve lived in Back of the yards for 28 years and counting. I work as the School Community Representative for Seward academy which allows me to work with many parents and children from the community.  I have a son and daughter and am always looking for activities for them to participate in. I found more sports activities geared towards boys and not too much for girls. I participated in Girl Scouts very briefly when I was a young girl and looked up information for the nearest troop. Sadly I could not find anything nearby, so the idea to start a troop in the Back of the yards was born.

We’ve had a tremendous amount of interest in the troop, we registered 50 girls on our 1st day. I never expected to have so many girls register but it just goes to show the great need there is for these types of programs. Our troop is for 2nd-5th grade girls, we meet every other Friday from 4:30-6:00pm but due to the lack of volunteers we’ve had to begin a waiting list. The girls are learning to be leaders in school and in our community.  Since starting the troop the girls have already begun to learn team-building, goal setting and money management skills with our cookie sales. We hope to have several summer outings with our cookie proceeds.  My hope for the troop is to be able to expose the girls to more than just our neighborhood. I want them to know the world is a huge place just waiting to be explored by them. I’m excited for this endeavor but am in need of some help so if anyone is interested please contact the church.
